Great Movie Scenes: Schindler’s List (1993)

In my opinion, this is the greatest scene in Schindler’s List.  It really shows Schindler’s character development from a money-focused businessman to someone who genuinely cared about the Jews and was willing to risk his life for them.  His breakdown, with Schindler looking around and realizing how many more lives he could have saved, is heart-breaking and just so good.  This scene is honestly perfect, and I can’t think of a single thing I would change about it.

Movies I’m Looking Forward To

Before I Go To Sleep (October 31)

  • The book this is adapted from is one of my favorites, so I’m keeping an eye out for this movie.  Although the premise sounds quite a bit like Memento, it’s vastly different.  However, I’m disappointed that the book looks considerably better than the movie.

Camp X-Ray (October 17)

  • Not going to lie, the only reason I watched the trailer was because I knew Kristen Stewart was in it. But it looks like a really solid, interesting movie.

Dear White People (October 17)

  • I know there’s been some controversy about this movie, but it looks like a great satire.  At the very least, it’s significantly fresher than those other boring, repetitive comedies.

Gone Girl (October 3)

  • I’ve made a post about what I’m hoping happens here.  I loved the book and now I’m desperate to see the movie.  It’s coming out in exactly a week!

Interstellar (November 7)

  • I’ve seen (and loved) all of Christopher Nolan’s movies, so I’m ridiculously excited for Interstellar.  I initially wasn’t too excited about its space-centric plot, but after watching the trailer, I’m sold.  I’m planning on seeing this one on the first day!

Into The Woods (December 25)

  • Stephen Sondheim, the composer and lyricist of Into The Woods, is one of my favorite artists and I admire him a lot. To be honest, Into The Woods (although it’s great) isn’t my favorite Sondheim musical.  And  while I love stage musicals, movie musicals generally disappoint me. So although I’ll definitely be seeing this one, it might not be in theaters.

Great Movie Scenes: Bicycle Thieves (1948)

Bicycle Thieves is considered a classic, and it’s easy to see why with this ending.

In the beginning, everything’s going great.  Antonio gets a job, and now he’s going to be able to provide his family with a better life.  Then his bike is stolen, and this eventually leads him to hit his son, visit the fortune teller he mocked earlier, and do the unthinkable.  Steal a bike himself.

Initially, there’s no way Antonio would do that.  But the stealing of his bike, over the course of the film, causes him to sink to unimaginable lows.  For many, a stolen bike would leave them irritated and angry.  But for Antonio, this bike is the only way for him to improve his family’s life.  He can’t afford another one and without it, he’ll lose his job.

In this scene, Antonio sees a bicycle temptingly propped up against a wall with no one guarding it.  Trying to protect his son, Bruno,  from what he’s about to do, Antonio gives him money to take the streetcar.  But the car leaves before Bruno can get on.  So, he witnesses Antonio stealing the bike, and getting chased down by the crowd.  Ironically, the last line in the movie, “And you can thank God.”, is spoken to Antonio.  With the opportunity to support his family ripped away from him, he really can.

Great Movie Scenes: The Godfather (1972)

The Godfather is considered one of the greatest movies ever created, so it’s no surprise that it’s full of great scenes.  But this scene was especially amazing.  The cross-cutting between Michael renouncing Satan at his son’s baptism and the murders is to die for.  (Pun intended.)  It’s such a harsh juxtaposition, but it works.  It allows the viewer to see the two sides of Michael: the good person facade he shows and his true nature.  INCREDIBLE.

Welcome!

Hi there!  Welcome to my blog!

I’m Samantha and I love film.  Most of my posts will be about film, but a few might be able other things I enjoy, like Broadway.

I’m hoping to blog everyday, but I’m pretty busy so that might not happen.  I’m going to try, though!

If you have any ideas about what I could write about or if you want to write an post yourself, feel free to tell me!  I would love to hear some suggestions.
